The Humbug Willow Creek Trail in Folsom is one of my favorite portrait locations in the entire Sacramento area — a 32-mile network of paved trails that winds through native oak woodlands, open greenbelt, and alongside both Humbug and Willow Creek corridors. It's a location with genuine variety: tucked-away creekside sections that feel wild and immersive, open grassy stretches with big sky views, and a native oak canopy that delivers beautiful, warm light in every season. What I love most about the Humbug Willow Creek Trail is the sense of space it offers. This isn't a small neighborhood park — it's a 32-mile trail network woven through some of the most beautiful natural landscape in the Folsom area, with multiple access points, varied terrain, and enough room to find a completely different backdrop depending on what each family needs.
The trail winds through three distinctly different types of scenery, each offering its own portrait possibilities:
The Creek & Native Oak Woodland The sections of the trail that follow Willow Creek through native oak woodland are some of the most beautiful portrait settings I work in. The mature valley oaks create a natural canopy of dappled shade and warm light, the creek adds movement and depth to the background, and the whole atmosphere is organic and immersive. Families who love the outdoors and want portraits that feel genuinely connected to nature consistently love this section. The creek especially shines in fall when the surrounding foliage turns and in spring when the water is running and wildflowers appear along the banks.
Open Greenbelt with Big Sky Views The trail also opens up into sweeping greenbelt sections — wide, grassy corridors under open sky that are perfect for families who want room to move and breathe. These sections work beautifully in golden hour when the low light skims across the grass and everything glows. They're also wonderful for larger family groups who need open space to spread out naturally.
The Wooded Trail Sections Through Residential Greenbelt Between the creek and the open spaces, the trail weaves through wooded greenbelt sections that offer their own quiet beauty — tree-lined paths with dappled light, natural shade, and the kind of peaceful, residential character that makes families feel at ease. Fall (October – November)
Fall is stunning along the Humbug Willow Creek Trail. The native oaks and surrounding trees turn warm shades of gold and amber, the trail takes on a rich, seasonal quality, and the late afternoon light through the oak canopy is some of the most beautiful I encounter anywhere in the Folsom area. Fall sessions here have a warmth and depth that consistently produces some of my favorite family galleries of the year.

Spring (March – May)
Spring brings wildflowers along the trail edges, fresh green grass in the greenbelt sections, and clear, flowing water in the creek corridor. The soft spring light is long and flattering, and the whole trail feels alive and vibrant. It's a wonderful season for families with young children who love to explore — there's always something to discover along the path.

Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions are timed around golden hour — the last hour before sunset — when the light drops low and warm through the oak canopy and across the open greenbelt. The trail's natural shade keeps families comfortable during sessions even in warmer months, and the quality of the light at golden hour here is genuinely stunning.

What to Wear

Fall Sessions Warm, earthy tones complement the golden oak foliage beautifully — rust, mustard, olive, camel, tan, deep burgundy, and forest green all work wonderfully here in fall. Cozy layers and textures add depth and warmth to fall portraits along the trail.

Spring Sessions Fresh, natural tones shine in spring — sage green, cream, soft white, blush, sky blue, and pale yellow all photograph beautifully against the lush green grasses and blooming wildflowers. Keep things airy and nature-forward.

Summer Sessions For golden hour summer sessions, warm neutrals — cream, tan, soft rust, and warm white — complement the rich evening light through the oak canopy beautifully. Avoid anything too bright or neon — the golden hour light is warm and rich and you want outfits that harmonize with it.

For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece rather than matching everyone exactly. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns. The trail's natural, organic setting rewards relaxed, tonal dressing that feels genuine rather than staged. Comfortable footwear suitable for a paved trail is recommended.
