William Land Park

Sacramento Family Portraits at

207 acres of open lawns, a beloved duck pond, and the kind of light that makes every family look incredible.

William Land Park is one of Sacramento's most beloved and versatile portrait locations — and once you've shot here, it's easy to see why. Wide open fields, towering mature trees, a picturesque duck pond, a historic rock garden, and a rose garden in full spring bloom. It's the kind of park where every family finds their perfect spot, and where no two sessions ever look quite the same.

Why do I love this location?

At over 207 acres, William Land Park gives us room to breathe, explore, and find the exact backdrop that fits your family's personality. It's a true Sacramento landmark — and for portrait photography, it's genuinely one of the most versatile locations in the entire region.
My personal favorite spot here is the duck pond and surrounding open fields. There's something naturally relaxed and joyful about that area — kids are immediately drawn to the water and the ducks, which means I get authentic, candid expressions without having to work for them. Meanwhile, the open lawns with their canopy of towering mature trees create beautiful, soft light that's flattering for the whole family. It's the sweet spot between natural and spacious that I look for in a great portrait location.
Beyond the pond, the park offers:
The WPA Rock Garden — a historic Depression-era garden full of winding paths, stone walls, blooming perennials, and lush plantings that create an intimate, textured backdrop unlike anything else in Sacramento.
The Rose Garden — stunning in spring when the roses are in full bloom, offering vibrant color and a classic, romantic quality that families love.
Open lawns with mature trees — perfect for wide, airy portraits with beautiful dappled light and plenty of space for kids to move and play.
This is also a fantastic location for families who want to make a full day of it — the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town are right next door, making it easy to combine your portrait session with a family adventure.

Best Time to Book Your Session Here

Spring (March – May)
Spring at William Land Park is spectacular. The rose garden comes into full bloom, the WPA Rock Garden bursts with color, the lawns are lush and green, and the duck pond is alive with activity. The soft spring light is incredibly flattering and the park feels vibrant and full of life. A wonderful season for families of all sizes.

Fall (October – November)
Fall brings golden light filtering through the park's towering mature trees, and the open fields take on that warm, rich quality that makes fall portraits so timeless. The duck pond area is especially beautiful in fall — the surrounding trees reflect in the water and the afternoon light turns everything honey-gold.

Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions are timed around golden hour — the last hour before sunset — when the light drops low and warm over the open lawns and duck pond. Kids running through the fields in that warm evening light is one of my favorite things to photograph anywhere, and William Land Park delivers that in spades.

What to Wear

Spring & Summer Sessions Bright, light colors photograph beautifully against the lush greenery, open sky, and water. Soft whites, sky blue, blush, sage green, and pale yellow all work wonderfully. Keep things fresh, airy, and coordinated without being too matchy.

Fall Sessions Warm, earthy tones are your best friend — rust, mustard, olive, tan, camel, and deep burgundy all complement the golden fall foliage and afternoon light beautifully. Layers and textures add depth and warmth to fall portraits.

For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece rather than dressing everyone identically. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns. The park's varied scenery rewards thoughtful, tonal outfit coordination.
