Leland Stanford Mansion

Sacramento Grad & Senior Portraits at the

Historic architecture. Manicured gardens. The most elegant portrait backdrop in downtown Sacramento.

If you're looking for a portrait location that feels genuinely elevated — somewhere that communicates sophistication, history, and character all at once — the Leland Stanford Mansion is it. Built in 1856 and beautifully restored to its Victorian grandeur, this California State Historic Park in the heart of downtown Sacramento offers a portrait backdrop unlike anything else in the region. It's my go-to recommendation for graduates and seniors who want something more than a typical outdoor session.

Why do I love this location?

The Leland Stanford Mansion is one of those Sacramento locations that stops people mid-scroll. The 19th-century Victorian brick architecture, the grand staircase, the meticulously landscaped period gardens — every corner of this property has a visual elegance that instantly elevates any portrait session.
What I love most is the flexibility it offers. Depending on the client's personality and the look they're going for, we can work in completely different ways on the same grounds:
The Mansion's Exterior & Grand Staircase The exterior of the mansion is dramatic and timeless — rich red brick, ornate Victorian detailing, and architectural lines that create natural leading lines and gorgeous depth in portraits. The grand staircase is a particularly striking backdrop that works beautifully for both bold, editorial-feeling images and softer, more classic portraits. For graduates especially, this is the backdrop that makes people stop and ask where the photos were taken.
The Landscaped Gardens The gardens surrounding the mansion have been carefully restored in a 19th-century style and offer a softer, more romantic counterpart to the architectural shots. Lush greenery, manicured plantings, and peaceful garden paths create an intimate setting that photographs beautifully in every season. From certain spots in the garden, you can also catch a glimpse of the California State Capitol in the background — a detail that adds another layer of Sacramento character to the images.
Together, these two settings within a single location give us a gallery with real range — bold and architectural in one moment, soft and garden-romantic in the next.

Best Time to Book Your Session Here

Spring (March – May)
Spring is a wonderful season at the Stanford Mansion grounds. The gardens come into bloom, adding color and softness against the grand Victorian brick exterior. The light is long and gentle in spring evenings, and the combination of blooming garden plantings against the historic architecture is genuinely stunning. For spring graduates, this is a natural fit.

Fall (October – November)
Fall brings warm, rich tones that complement the mansion's red brick and stonework beautifully. The surrounding trees take on golden and amber hues, and the late afternoon light casts everything in a warm, painterly glow. Fall sessions here have a classic, timeless quality that I absolutely love — sophisticated and rich without being overdone.

Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions at the Stanford Mansion are timed around golden hour, when the warm evening light hits the brick facade and garden paths in a way that's soft, glowing, and incredibly flattering. The grounds are peaceful in the late evening and the light quality at that hour is some of the best I work with all year.

What to Wear

The Stanford Mansion's Victorian elegance calls for outfits that feel intentional and elevated — this is not the location for overly casual looks. Here's what works best:

Spring Sessions Soft, romantic tones complement both the gardens and the architecture beautifully in spring. Dusty rose, sage green, cream, ivory, soft lavender, and warm white all photograph wonderfully here. Flowy fabrics, elegant draping, and refined silhouettes feel right at home against this backdrop.

Fall Sessions Rich, warm tones work beautifully against the brick and fall foliage. Deep burgundy, forest green, camel, tan, rust, and warm gold all complement the mansion's color palette perfectly. Structured layers and elevated textures — wool, velvet, refined knitwear — add depth and sophistication.

Summer Sessions For golden hour summer sessions, clean neutrals and warm whites photograph beautifully. Cream, ivory, soft white, and warm tan all glow in the late evening light against the brick facade.
For all sessions: This location rewards a more elevated, intentional approach to outfit planning. Think clean lines, refined fabrics, and a color palette that feels considered rather than casual. Avoid overly busy patterns, athletic wear, and neon colors. Coordinate rather than match — and when in doubt, err on the side of classic.
