With a mini Golden Gate Bridge, a stunning rose garden, golden ginkgo tree tunnels, and lush shaded walkways around every corner, this 300-acre campus offers a portrait backdrop for every personality, every season, and every milestone. Why do I love this location?

What makes Sacramento State so special for portrait photography is its sheer variety. In the span of a single session, we can move from the architectural drama of the Guy West Bridge to the soft romance of the Founders Rose Garden to the warm dappled light of the Library Quad — and every backdrop feels completely different. It's one of the few locations I shoot at where the campus itself tells a story.
Here's how I think about each key spot:
The Guy West Bridge This is Sac State's signature portrait location — and for good reason. Designed to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge in both form and its iconic international orange color, the Guy West Bridge is instantly recognizable and endlessly striking in photos. It's the backdrop every Sac State grad wants, and it delivers architectural drama unlike anything else on campus. It can get busy, so I time sessions strategically to make the most of it.
The Founders Rose Garden Named in memory of Stephen Walker, one of Sac State's founding administrators, this garden features over 60 beautifully maintained rose bushes bordering the main quad. In spring, it's absolutely breathtaking — lush, fragrant, and full of vibrant color. It's my go-to spot for anyone who wants something soft, romantic, and bursting with life. For spring grads especially, this garden is a must.
The Ginkgo Trees & Tree-Lined Walkways Sac State is famously known as a tree campus, and these ginkgo trees between Alpine and Calaveras Halls are the crown jewel. In fall, the late-day sun shines through them in brilliant golden shafts that make portraits look almost otherworldly. The tree-lined walkways across campus offer beautiful dappled light in every season — intimate, organic, and incredibly flattering.
The Library Quad The Library Quad is one of campus's most underrated portrait spots. The arbors draped in climbing plants and the surrounding mature trees create a shaded, lushly green environment that's perfect for softer, more intimate portraits. The filtered light here is naturally beautiful even on brighter days.

Spring (March – May)
Spring is peak season at Sac State — and for good reason. The Founders Rose Garden is in full, stunning bloom, the campus greenery is at its most vibrant, and the whole campus has an energy that's perfect for celebrating graduates and families alike. Spring light is soft, long, and flattering. If you're a spring graduate, this is your season.

Fall (October – November)
Fall is when the ginkgo trees steal the show. As the leaves turn that brilliant gold and the late afternoon sun filters through the canopy, the campus transforms into something truly spectacular. Fall portraits at Sac State have a warmth and depth that's hard to replicate anywhere else — rich, golden, and timeless.

Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions are timed around golden hour, when the warm evening light filters through the full summer canopy and casts everything in a beautiful honeyed glow. The campus is quieter in summer, which means less foot traffic and more flexibility to work across multiple spots in a single session.

What to Wear

Spring Sessions The rose garden and lush greenery call for soft, romantic tones. Blush, dusty lavender, sage green, cream, and soft white all complement the campus beautifully in spring. Flowy fabrics and soft layers look especially wonderful here.

Fall Sessions Warm, earthy tones are everything in fall at Sac State. Rust, mustard, olive, camel, tan, and deep burgundy all glow against the golden ginkgo trees and fall foliage. Layer up with cozy textures — they photograph beautifully in the fall light.

Summer Sessions For golden hour summer sessions, warm neutrals — tan, cream, soft rust, and warm white — harmonize with the rich evening light. Keep things coordinated and relaxed.
For all seasons: Coordinate your outfits around one anchor piece rather than matching everyone exactly. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns. Sac State's varied campus backdrops reward thoughtful, tonal dressing.
