Greenhaven Greenbelt

Sacramento Family Portraits at

Open fields, warm fall color, and a relaxed neighborhood feel that lets your family just be themselves.

The Greenhaven Greenbelt is one of Sacramento's most peaceful and underutilized family portrait locations — a picturesque stretch of open greenbelt tucked between Greenhaven Drive and Havenside Drive in the Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood. With wide open grassy stretches, mature trees lining the path, and a quiet, unhurried atmosphere that makes even the most camera-shy family members relax, this is a location that delivers beautiful, natural family portraits without any of the crowds.

Why do I love this location?

What I love most about the Greenhaven Greenbelt is its simplicity. There's no landmark to queue for, no busy parking lot, no other photographers jostling for the same backdrop. It's a genuine neighborhood greenbelt — the kind of place where families stroll in the evenings and kids run ahead on the path — and that relaxed, residential energy translates directly into portraits that feel authentic and unhurried.
The open grassy stretches are the heart of what makes this location work so well for family sessions. Wide, open lawn areas framed by the greenbelt's mature trees give us room to spread out, move around, and capture the kind of candid moments that define a great family gallery. Kids have space to run and play naturally, parents have room to be themselves, and I have the flexibility to work in whatever direction the light is best.
The tree canopy along the greenbelt adds beautiful framing and dappled shade that keeps everyone comfortable and well-lit even on brighter days. And in fall — my favorite season here — the foliage along the trail and around the open lawns turns warm shades of gold and amber that wrap every image in that rich, seasonal warmth families love.
This is also an ideal location for families with young children or babies. The flat, open terrain is easy to navigate with strollers and little ones, the atmosphere is calm rather than overwhelming, and the lack of crowds means we're never waiting for a backdrop to clear.

Best Time to Book Your Session Here

Fall (October – November)
My Favorite Season Here Fall is when the Greenhaven Greenbelt truly shines for family portraits. The mature trees along the trail turn warm shades of gold, amber, and rust, and that seasonal color frames the open grassy stretches in a way that feels rich, cozy, and timeless. Late afternoon fall light here is soft and warm, and the combination of open space and colorful foliage gives every family gallery a natural variety that I love. If you're planning fall family photos, this greenbelt should be on your shortlist.

Spring (March – May)
Spring brings fresh green grass and lush new growth to the greenbelt, creating a vibrant, life-filled backdrop for family sessions. The open lawns are at their most lush and inviting, the light is long and soft in the evenings, and the whole greenbelt has a gentle energy that's wonderful for families with young children.

Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions are timed around golden hour — the last hour before sunset — when the light drops low and warm across the open fields and the tree canopy glows with that honeyed late-day quality. It's a beautiful, relaxed setting for families who want warm, glowing portraits in a wide open space.

What to Wear

Fall Sessions (Recommended) Fall foliage calls for warm, earthy tones that feel right at home in the season. Rust, mustard, olive, camel, tan, deep burgundy, and forest green all complement the golden fall color beautifully. Cozy layers — soft knits, flannels, denim — add texture and warmth that photograph wonderfully in fall portraits. This is the season to lean into those rich, cozy family looks.
Spring & Summer Sessions Bright, light colors work beautifully against the lush green grass and open sky. Soft whites, sky blue, blush, sage green, and pale yellow all look fresh and vibrant here. Keep things airy and coordinated without being too matchy.

For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece rather than dressing everyone identically. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns. The greenbelt's open, natural setting rewards relaxed, tonal dressing that feels genuine rather than staged.
