Gibson Ranch Regional Park is one of those locations that genuinely surprises people the first time they see their portraits from it. A 355-acre working ranch and regional park in Elverta, just north of Sacramento, it offers something completely different from every other location on my list — wide open meadows, weathered rustic fences, a lake with piers stretching into the water, miles of nature trails, a charming bridge, and the kind of sweeping golden hour sunset light that makes portraits look like they belong on the cover of a magazine. For families and graduates who want something with real outdoor character and ranch-inspired beauty, Gibson Ranch is the answer.

Why do I love this location?

Gibson Ranch is genuinely unlike anywhere else I shoot in the Sacramento area. Most portrait locations lean either toward manicured gardens or forested trails — Gibson Ranch leans into something entirely its own: the wide open, pastoral beauty of a working ranch landscape set against big California skies.
My personal favorite spots for sessions are the open meadows and rustic fences, and it's easy to see why. Wide grassy meadows stretching under open sky, with weathered wooden fences that add natural texture, depth, and a timeless ranch character to every image. There's a visual honesty to this setting — it doesn't feel staged or manufactured. The park's lush landscapes turn warm gold and amber, the meadows take on a rich seasonal quality, and the golden sunset light at this time of year is some of the most extraordinary I encounter anywhere in the Sacramento area. Fall portraits here consistently stop people mid-scroll — rich, warm, and beautifully evocative of the California landscape at its most stunning.

Spring (March – May)
Spring brings the meadows to life with fresh green grass and wildflowers, and the lake area is particularly beautiful as the surrounding vegetation fills in. The soft, long spring light is incredibly flattering, and the open meadows feel alive and vibrant. It's a wonderful season for families with young children who love space to run and explore.

Summer (June – August)
Summer at Gibson Ranch is all about golden hour — scheduled in the last hour before sunset when the light turns warm and sweeping across the open meadows, the lake, and the weathered fences. Fall Sessions Warm, earthy tones are perfect here in fall — rust, mustard, olive, camel, tan, deep burgundy, and forest green all complement the golden meadows and fall foliage beautifully. Spring Sessions Fresh, natural tones work beautifully against the lush green meadows and spring wildflowers — sage green, cream, soft white, blush, sky blue, and warm tan all photograph wonderfully here. Keep things relaxed and nature-forward.
