Groluv Flower Farm is a working flower farm in Elk Grove, growing fresh seasonal blooms that are hand-cut and arranged into bouquets throughout the year. For portrait photography, it's a rare combination: rows of color at eye level and knee level, and a mature redwood grove rising behind them for depth and shade. Whether you're a family wanting portraits full of color and texture, or simply want a session that feels like nowhere else in the area, this farm delivers something genuinely different from a typical park or garden setting.
Groluv is the location I recommend when someone tells me they want their portraits to feel colorful, textured, and completely unlike a standard park session. It's a real, working flower farm — not a manicured garden — and that gives the images an authentic, lived-in beauty that's hard to find elsewhere in the Sacramento area. The standout setting here is the redwood grove backdrop with the flower fields in the foreground. The tall redwoods create a rich, dark, textured backdrop and soft dappled shade, while the rows of blooms in front add color, layering, and depth. It's a striking combination — the scale and shade of the trees paired with the intimacy and color of the flower rows — and it photographs beautifully whether you're working wide to show off the whole scene or in close among the blooms. Depending on the season, the farm is growing ranunculus, anemones, tulips, peonies, sunflowers, dahlias, lisianthus, marigolds, chrysanthemums, and seasonal fillers like eucalyptus — so the color palette and feel of the farm changes throughout the season, which means no two sessions here look quite the same.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is one of the best times to shoot at Groluv. Ranunculus, anemones, tulips, and peonies come into bloom, filling the rows with soft, romantic color right as the redwood grove is at its lushest. This is the season I recommend most for families wanting a colorful, garden-fresh feel.
Summer (June-August)
Summer keeps the farm in full swing, with sunflowers, dahlias, lisianthus, marigolds, and other warm-season blooms taking over the fields. The redwood grove offers welcome shade on hot days, making it one of the more comfortable farm sessions in summer heat, while the fields stay bright and full.
Early Fall (September- October)
The farm stays open into early fall, with chrysanthemums and the last of the season's blooms carrying the color a little longer. This is a nice window for a warmer, more golden feel before the season winds down. Groluv closes for the season by mid-October, so early fall bookings need to be locked in early.
Spring & Summer Sessions Soft, warm tones photograph beautifully against the blooms and greenery — blush, dusty rose, sage, cream, ivory, soft lavender, and warm white all work well here. Flowy fabrics and soft layers feel right at home in the flower rows.
Early Fall Sessions As the palette shifts, warmer neutrals and richer tones — rust, mustard, olive, camel, and deep berry — complement the last of the season's blooms and the shaded redwood backdrop nicely.
For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece rather than matching everyone exactly. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns — the farm's color and texture already give the images plenty of visual interest on their own.
