Sacramento's State Capitol and the 40 acres of Capitol Park that surround it make up one of the most diverse and visually extraordinary portrait locations in all of California. From the sweeping neoclassical grandeur of the Capitol building's west steps to the fragrant World Peace Rose Garden, the stunning Camellia Grove, and the Victorian tree-lined walkways that stretch across 12 city blocks — this is a location that works beautifully for families, graduates, and seniors alike. No matter what kind of portraits you're envisioning, Capitol Park almost certainly has the perfect backdrop for them.

Why do I love this location?

Capitol Park was originally envisioned in 1863 by California's governor as a Victorian garden more spectacular than any other state capitol grounds in the country. Over 160 years later, it still lives up to that ambition. With over 200 species of trees — including some of the largest specimens of their kind in all of California — and a collection of stunning garden areas spread across 40 acres and 12 city blocks, this park offers genuine, extraordinary variety in a single downtown location.

The Capitol Building & West Steps The neoclassical dome of the California State Capitol is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Sacramento — and for portrait photography, it delivers instant, undeniable visual impact. The grand west steps create natural leading lines, architectural depth, and a sense of scale and significance that elevates any portrait session. Whether framed from a distance with the dome rising in the background or used as a close architectural backdrop, the Capitol building makes every subject look like they belong in history.
The World Peace Rose Garden With over 153 varieties of roses surrounding a charming central fountain, the World Peace Rose Garden is one of the most photographed spots in Sacramento — and for good reason. In spring and early summer when the roses peak, the garden is breathtaking: fragrant, lush, and bursting with color. It's a naturally romantic and elegant backdrop that works beautifully for families, graduates, and seniors who want something soft and vibrant.
The Camellia Grove Over 800 varieties of camellias make Capitol Park's grove one of the most spectacular floral displays in California, typically blooming in late winter through early spring. The variety of colors and textures — white, red, pink, and striped blooms against rich evergreen foliage — creates a lush, botanical backdrop unlike anything else in Sacramento. Sacramento celebrates Camellia Day each year in the park, a testament to just how extraordinary this grove is.
The Victorian Tree-Lined Walkways The park's tree-lined lanes were designed in classic Victorian style — long, dramatic pathways flanked by massive shade trees that create natural tunnels of light and shadow. Some of these trees are among the largest of their kind in the entire state of California. For portraits, these walkways create depth, symmetry, and beautiful dappled light in every season. They're some of my favorite spots in the entire park for candid, movement-based family portraits.

Spring (March – May)
Spring is the peak season at Capitol Park and it's not hard to see why. The camellias bloom from late winter into spring, followed closely by the roses in the World Peace Rose Garden. The park is alive with color, fragrance, and lush greenery, and the soft spring light is long and flattering. If blooming floral backdrops are on your portrait wish list, this is your season — and it's worth booking early.

Fall (October – November)
Fall transforms the park's massive tree collection into a gallery of warm gold and amber. The light through the Victorian walkways in fall is rich, painterly, and incredibly atmospheric. The Capitol building's neoclassical architecture looks especially striking against a blue fall sky. For families and grads who want that warm, timeless fall quality, Capitol Park delivers it on a grand scale.

Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions are timed around golden hour — that last hour before sunset when the light turns warm and soft over the Capitol's dome and the rose garden. The park is beautiful and peaceful in the late evening, and the quality of the light at that hour is some of the best I work with all year.

What to Wear

Spring Sessions The rose garden and camellia grove call for soft, romantic tones. Blush, dusty rose, sage green, cream, ivory, and soft lavender all photograph beautifully against the floral backdrops and lush greenery. Flowy fabrics and soft layers look wonderful here in spring.

Fall Sessions Warm, earthy tones complement the golden fall foliage and the warm brick tones of the Capitol building beautifully. Rust, mustard, olive, camel, deep burgundy, and forest green all work wonderfully. Structured layers and rich textures add depth and sophistication to fall portraits here.
Summer Sessions For golden hour summer sessions, warm neutrals — cream, ivory, tan, and warm white — glow beautifully in the evening light against the Capitol's neoclassical facade and the lush summer greenery.

For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece rather than matching everyone exactly. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns. Capitol Park's grandeur rewards thoughtful, intentional outfit planning — the setting is iconic and your outfits should feel like they belong in it.
