Jensen Botanical Garden is one of those locations that genuinely surprises people the first time they visit — a 3.5-acre botanical oasis tucked just off Fair Oaks Boulevard in Carmichael that feels completely removed from the surrounding neighborhood. Founded in 1958 by Charles C. Jensen, a retired produce buyer who spent decades hauling magnolias, dogwoods, Japanese maples, and azaleas back to his property by the truckload, this garden has evolved into one of the most beautiful and varied portrait locations in the entire Sacramento area. Spring and fall are both spectacular here — and for very different reasons.

Jensen Botanical Garden has something I rarely find in a single location: genuine botanical variety. In the span of one session, we can move from the dramatic burst of thousands of tulips and blooming magnolias to the intimate canopy of Japanese maples, then deeper into the redwood grove where the light becomes soft and cathedral-like, and out again onto the winding garden paths lined with azaleas, camellias, and seasonal blooms. Every corner of this garden offers something completely different — and that variety translates directly into galleries with real range and character.

The Japanese maples leaf out in fresh, vivid greens, and the entire garden feels alive and vibrant. The soft spring light is long and incredibly flattering. If floral portraits are on your wish list, spring at Jensen is your season — and it books fast. The tulip window in particular is short, so early booking is strongly encouraged.

Fall (October – November)
Japanese Maple Season Fall brings a completely different kind of magic to Jensen. The Japanese maples turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, and the warm fall light filtering through that seasonal color creates portraits with a richness and depth that I absolutely love. The garden is quieter in fall than in the spring tulip rush, which means more flexibility and fewer crowds to work around. For anyone who wants that vivid, color-saturated fall look, the Japanese maples at Jensen deliver it beautifully.
