Arcade Creek Park Preserve is one of the most genuinely wild and beautiful portrait locations I shoot at in the greater Sacramento area. Tucked into a residential neighborhood in Citrus Heights, this restored creek preserve feels less like a park and more like a true forest — a canopied riparian trail winding alongside Arcade Creek, through towering oaks and native woodland, with bridges crossing the water and wildflowers dotting the path in spring. In fall, when the foliage turns and the warm light filters through the tree canopy, it becomes something extraordinary.
Why do I love this location?
What sets Arcade Creek Park Preserve apart from every other location on my list is its character. This isn't a manicured park or a landscaped garden — it's a restored riparian preserve that feels genuinely wild and immersive. Walking the forest trail here with a family or a graduate feels like stepping out of the Sacramento suburbs entirely and into something that belongs in a different landscape altogether.
My favorite spot for sessions is the riparian forest trail itself — the winding path that follows Arcade Creek through a canopy of oaks and native woodland. The combination of the creek, the dappled forest light, the bridges crossing the water, and the seasonal changes in the surrounding foliage gives us a portrait backdrop that is rich, layered, and completely distinctive. No two sessions here look exactly alike because the light through the canopy shifts constantly, and the seasonal changes transform the trail dramatically from one visit to the next.
In spring, wildflowers bloom along the trail edges and the creek runs vigorously after winter rains, adding movement and life to every image. In fall — my favorite season here — the foliage along the trail turns warm gold and amber, and the afternoon light filtering through the changing canopy creates a warmth and depth that I find genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else. It's the kind of light that makes portraits look like they were painted rather than photographed.

Fall (October – November)
My Favorite Season Here Fall is when Arcade Creek Park Preserve is at its most spectacular. The riparian forest along the trail turns vivid shades of gold, rust, and amber, and the afternoon light through the canopy at that time of year is some of the warmest and most beautiful I work with anywhere. The creek adds a reflective quality to the light that enhances everything around it, and the whole trail feels like it belongs in a storybook. If you've ever wanted portraits that look like they were taken somewhere truly extraordinary, fall at this preserve is the answer. Book early — fall dates go fast.
Spring (March – May)
Spring brings the preserve alive in a completely different way. The creek flows strongest after winter rains, wildflowers appear along the trail edges, and the fresh new growth on the oaks creates a vibrant, saturated green canopy that photographs beautifully. The soft spring light is long and flattering, and the combination of flowing water and blooming wildflowers gives spring sessions here an energy and color that's hard to find anywhere else.
Summer (June – August)
Summer sessions at the preserve are timed around golden hour — the last hour before sunset — when the light drops low and warm through the full summer canopy. The forest trail provides natural shade that keeps everyone comfortable even in summer, and the dappled golden light filtering through the leaves at that hour is genuinely stunning. The creek adds a peaceful, cooling presence that makes summer sessions here feel unhurried and magical.

The riparian forest trail at Arcade Creek has a natural, organic, outdoorsy character — your outfits should feel like they belong in that environment rather than fighting against it.
Fall Sessions (Recommended) Warm, earthy tones are everything here in fall. Rust, mustard, olive, camel, tan, deep burgundy, and forest green all glow beautifully against the golden foliage and warm forest light. Cozy layers — soft knits, flannels, denim jackets — add texture and warmth that photograph wonderfully in fall portraits. This is the season to lean into those rich, nature-inspired looks.
Spring Sessions Fresh, natural tones work beautifully in spring — sage green, cream, soft white, blush, sky blue, and warm tan all complement the lush green canopy and wildflowers without competing. Keep things relaxed and nature-forward.
Summer Sessions For golden hour summer sessions, warm neutrals — cream, tan, soft rust, and warm white — harmonize with the dappled forest light beautifully. Avoid anything too bright or neon in a forest setting — the light is already rich and warm, and you want outfits that complement it.
For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece. Avoid busy patterns, large logos, and neon colors. The forest trail's organic, layered backdrop rewards natural, tonal dressing. Also a practical note — this is a trail, so comfortable footwear that can handle an unpaved path is a good idea.
