The American River Parkway is Sacramento's crown jewel for outdoor photography — and once you've had your family portraits taken here, it's easy to understand why. Along the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, the riparian forest opens up into some of the most beautiful portrait backdrops in the entire region. Trees that tower overhead, the American River glimmering in the background, and light that filters through the canopy in a way that feels almost cinematic. This is one of those locations that does the heavy lifting for you.

Why do I love this location?

The American River Parkway stretches 32 miles through Sacramento County, but the section I keep coming back to for family sessions is along the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail — and specifically the combination of the towering riparian forest trees paired with the river as a backdrop.
What makes this location so special for portrait photography is the layering. When you position a family with those massive valley oaks and cottonwoods framing the shot and the river visible in the background, you get a depth and sense of place that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else near Sacramento. It doesn't feel like a park session — it feels like an adventure. Like your family belongs in this landscape.
The trail itself winds through a lush riparian corridor that changes beautifully with the light and seasons. In spring, the whole forest comes alive — the grasses are green, wildflowers dot the trail edges, and the river runs clear and bright. In summer, the canopy is at its fullest and the late evening light filters through the leaves in warm, golden shafts that are absolutely magical for portraits.
This is also a wonderfully active, energetic location for families with kids who have a hard time sitting still — the trail gives everyone room to move, explore, and be themselves, which almost always leads to the most authentic and joyful images.

Spring (March – May)
Spring is one of my two favorite seasons to shoot at the American River Parkway. The riparian forest is lush and vibrant — the grasses are impossibly green, wildflowers bloom along the trail edges, and the river is running beautifully. The soft spring light is long and flattering, and the whole corridor feels alive and energetic. It's a wonderful season for families who want portraits full of color, life, and movement.

Summer (June – August)
Summer is the other season I love here — timed carefully around golden hour. In the last hour before sunset, the light filters through the full summer canopy in warm, glowing shafts, and the river catches that honeyed late-day color behind your family. It's genuinely one of the most beautiful natural light situations I work in all year. The key is timing, and I handle all of that — you just show up and enjoy it.

The American River Parkway has a natural, earthy, adventure-in-the-outdoors feel — and your outfits should complement that energy.

Spring Sessions Fresh, light colors work beautifully here in spring. Soft whites, sage green, sky blue, blush, and cream all photograph wonderfully against the lush green foliage and river. Keep things airy and coordinated — the natural setting provides all the color and texture you need.

Summer Sessions For golden hour summer sessions, warm neutrals and earthy tones shine. Tan, cream, soft rust, warm white, and olive green all complement the warm evening light and the deep green canopy beautifully. Avoid anything too bright or neon — the light at golden hour is warm and rich, and you want your outfits to work with it rather than compete.

For all seasons: Coordinate your family's outfits around one anchor piece rather than matching everyone exactly. Avoid large logos and busy patterns. This location has a natural, organic quality — outfits that feel relaxed and intentional will always look best here.
